REPLACED MY BATTERY ON MY 2004 F150, NOW I GET SERVICE ENGINE SOON

Question: I JUST REPLACED MY BATTERY ON MY 2004 F150,4.6 LITER NOW MY TRUCK IDLES REALLY LOW,I HAVE DRIVEN THE TRUCK ABOUT 60 MILES SINCE I CHANGE BATTERIES NOW I GET SERVICE ENGINE SOON DISPLAY TODAY THE LIGHT JUST CAME ON BUT THE LOW IDLE WAS FROM THE BEGINNIG OF THE BATTERY CHANGE Answer: IN ORDER FOR THE LIGHT TO COME ON AND SET A CODE, THE ISSUE HAS TO THERE FOR A CERTAIN LEGTH OF TIME. FOR EXAMPLE A MISFIRE MAY OCCUR BUT UNTILL IT OCCURS 100 TIMES DURING 400 CYCLES IT WILL NOT SET A CODE. The first thing to do would be to extract the check engine light codes. This can be done with a Scan Tool or you can take it to an Autozone and they will do it for free. Once you have the code it will help guide to the problem area. Trouble Code Descriptions

last night the "check engine" light came on

QUESTION:
I have a 1998 Honda Civic EX and just recently had a yearly maintenance in July 2008. Just last night the "check engine" light came on. What can be the problem with my Honda? What signs can I look for? Where do I start for troubleshooting since I don't have the manual?
ANSWER:
An error has been detected by the engine management system and you need a computer scan done to find out what is causing the check engine light illuminate. You can get it done for free at your local Autozone or you can purchase a scan tool and do it yourself.

How to check trouble codes on a 92 la sabre without the scanner

Checker and autozone type places will pull the codes for you for free most the time. Because they will sell you the part to fix it right there too. If you want to do it yourself, no problem. Follow these steps : EXTRACT GM TROUBLE CODES You will find step by step procedures for extracting the codes yourself along with code descriptions and causes for each code. EXAMPLE: CODE 24 Trouble Code 24 indicates that the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is reporting an abnormally low reading when other sensors indicate it should be higher. The conditions for setting this code are: 1) no Code 33 or 34 (MAF Error) is present, and 2) the vehicle speed signal indicates < 4 MPH and 3) engine speed is between 1400 and 4400 RPM, and 4) during a low load condition (LV8 between 50 and 99), and 5) transmission not in Park or Neutral, and 6) all conditions met for more than 20 seconds If the code was logged when the vehicle was in motion, the following should be checked: 1) Defective or corroded VSS connections 2) Maladjusted TPS sensor. The TPS should read about 0.42 volts at closed throttle 3) Defective speedometer cable 4) Bad or missing speedo drive gear(s) in tail shaft housing of the transmission 5) Defective VSS 6) Defective ECM

What does it mean when the TPMS light on my 2006 Pilot comes on?

QUESTON: What does it mean when the TPMS light on my 2006 Honda Pilot comes on? I know this means that the system has been deactivated, but what are the possible causes and can I ignore this or is there a way to resolve this without having to spend too much money? ANSWER: The first thing you should do is check the air pressure in the tires. Does the words TPMS actually light up or is there a picture of a tire with an exclamation point lit? If filling the tires up with air and driving the car over 30mph doesn't turn the light off than chances are there is a problem with one of the sensors. Usually they are the part of the system that commonly fails. Continuing to drive with the light on will not harm anything. Its just a tire pressure monitoring system. Basically warning you when a tire is low and prevents rapid tire wear or running it flat.

where is the right front 02 sensor

QUESTION:
Where is the right front 02 sensor at on a 1998 Chevrolet ss z28 Camaro 5.7liter and do I just unplug the old one and plug in the new to get the engine lite to go off?
ANSWER:
The right front O2 sensor would be on the passenger side exhaust before the catalytic converter. It requires a 7/8 wrench to remove it. As for the light going off, if this is why the light is on, then yes, replacing it will make the light go out.

check engine light came on and a mechanic read the code and it came up P1400

QUESTION: Recently my check engine light came on and a mechanic read the code and it came up P1400 which is the manifold differential pressure sensor circuit. I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant; does this need to be repaired by a Mitsubishi dealer or can I take it to any auto repair facility? ANSWER: P1400 is an MDP sensor. on turbo equipped engines a special sensor is used to measure manifold pressure (MDP=Manifold differential pressure)...or the difference between manifold pressure and barometric pressure. the engine controller has seen values outside of what is programmed normal and therefore set the code. manifold pressure sensing is critical to fuel management. if the sensor is remote mounted and has a hose going to it...check the hose for splits, holes, soft places that might collapse, kinks or anything else that might prevent the pressure signal from reaching the sensor. if it's not that simple...you may a have a failed sensor or engine controller. to sort that out you need to do some specific pinpoint testing using the trouble tree for that code plus a DVOM...at the very least. Most auto mechanics would probably just change the sensor and send you on your way, after charging you a hefty fee for the part. If it were my car I'd check for vacuum leaks everywhere, including all devices that use vacuum (especially the ones going to the sensor). While it could be a bad sensor just the same, I have a suspicion that the code is giving you a symptom and the real problem might be a vacuum leak or valve cover gasket, etc.

How do I extract the check engine light codes?

QUESTION:
I have a 1995 Ford Mustang GT and my check engine light is on. How do I extract the codes? Do I need a scan tool or can I do it without one?
ANSWER:
You do not need a scan tool to extract the codes on this vehicle. This vehicle is OBD I and does not switch till 1996 so you do not need a scan tool. Basically you install a jumper wire or paper clip in the diagnostic test port located under the hood toward the passenger side firewall. Once the jumper is in place, you turn the key on (do not start engine) and the check engine light will flash the code. Here is a link to Complete Instructions and a full list of Ford OBD I Check Engine Light Codes with descriptions of each code: EXTRACT FORD CODES

slip, brake , and vsm light all light up at the same

QUESTION: 2005 Infiniti qx56 v8, why do my slip, brake , and vsm light all light up at the same time when ever they want to? I turn it on and pull off and all three are lit up in my odometer I am not sure why. My brake is not in but the light is still on and so is the slip light and the vsm light. I don't know what it is. ANSWER: There are several reasons for the lights to come on. About the only thing you can do without a scan tool is check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder. If it is close to the minimum level it may drop below on turns and stopping which will cause all of the lights to turn on.If it is full, you will have to have the system scanned to determine what is failing and either make the repair yourself or have it repaired.

2005 Chevy Silverado error code P0449 registers

Question: 2005 Chevy Silverado error code P0449 registers when cleared it comes back after a couple starts. What could be the problem Answer: This is usually a problem with the Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid. If it was me, I would do a bit of troubleshooting BEFORE replacing parts. You could just have a loose or broken wire or connector.

my 2006 ford escape 2.3 litre 4x4 light flashes 8 times... what does it mean?

The light flashing 8 time means that the computer is getting invalid wheel speed information. This could be mismatched tires (2 new tires on one axle with 2 old tires on the other) or even 2 different size tires. Or could even be a bad wheel speed sensor. You need to get somebody with a scan tool to see if they can pull the codes for you. A parts house normally will do this for free.

Automotive Scan Tools - Code Reader

Professional garage technicians know well that there are a number of different great scanners available. For example, there are some great scanners that are designed to scan for air bag and ABS codes. OTC makes a great air bag and ABS scanner that can diagnose and clear all air bag, ABS, and even engine codes. When a car problem occurs, the first step is to trouble shoot the related system. Then, perform simple tests that can lead you to the cause of the malfunction and the repairs needed to correct the problem. Sometimes You need the right test equipment. There are many different automotive SCAN TOOLS to choose from. Select one that meets your needs. More Scan Tools.

2001 olds 4.0l codes p0101,p0121,p0171,p0174,p0300

P0101 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance P0121 Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance Problem P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1) P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2) P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected More than likely these are all related to a failed MAF Sensor and when you have it removed(since it is connected to the throttle body) clean the inside of the throttle body around the butterfly. This should take care of your problems. The codes will need to be reset after the repairs are made to get the check engine light to go out.

2003 suzuki xl7, O2senser problem, service engine soon

Question: I have a 2003 Suzuki xl7, O2senser problem, service engine soon light came on, it read #1, o2sensor circuit, no activity, bank 1 sensor 1 po#134 mod$0i #2 po134 o2 sensor no activity, bank 1 sensor 1, able to clear, but it comes back on in about 30 to 40 miles Answer: Not much diagnosing can be done without having a scan tool that can read the data from the oxygen sensor but, the oxygen sensor is more than likely not responding to the oxygen content in the exhaust and the only repair is to replace it but first make sure all fuses and the oxygen sensor relay is good, you can just swap the relay with another on, also unplug the sensor and make sure you have 12v and ground going to it, if so replace the sensor. the number 1 oxygen sensor is the one before the catalytic converter.

Chevy Code 42

Had a customer bring in a 1989 Chevy Van G20, 5.7L with a stumble issue and intermittent stall. The check engine light was on .The check engine light codes can be Extracted without a scan tool. The code that was extracted was Code 42 : Electronic spark timing (EST) circuit fault. A quick read of a great article on Code 42 that covers the specific components involved : The EST system consists of the ignition module, computer (ECM/PCM), and the connecting wiring. Used a Multi-meter to test and check the wiring and found no issues, but what was noticed is the fuel injectors would click several times by themselves with the key off. This was a bit strange, but lead me to believe there had to be a short somewhere causing this and sure enough there was an internal short in the ECM. Purchased an ECM for the local parts house for just under $100.00 and replaced it. The engine no longer has the stumble and it no longer puffs smoke when you start it up (originally thought to be valve seals gone bad). Customer happy! Side note* I did try a new EST first as it was easy to get to and a quick test. It is located under the drivers seat along with the ECM.

Check Engine Light On, What Do I do ?

When the Check Engine Light comes on and keeps a steady light the computer is letting you know there is an issue with one of the sensors or sensor readings. When the Check Engine Light is flashing the computer is letting you know that something serious is wrong and the vehicle should not be driven more than a mile and then towed to prevent irreversible damage.
On vehicles that are 1996 and newer, It requires the use of a Scan Tool to extract the check engine light codes. Once you have the code you can look out the code definition and determine the best course of action for the issue. Once the repairs are completed you will need to clear the codes out of the computers memory with the Scan Tool.

Code P0506 - 2005 Ford Crown Victoria - low idle, stalling

Customer Complaint: Intermittent stalling Action Taken: Test drove the car and was able to reproduce the condition. Also noticed a low idle. Hooked up my Genisys Scan Tool and found a history code P0506. Checked Idle speed at 500 rpm, should be around 750 rpm P0506 : Idle Control System RPM Lower Than Expected Normally you would jump to the IAC ( Idle Air Control ) but this vehicle does not have one as it is Throttle by wire (electronic throttle control - ETC). Description: Vehicles with electronic throttle control (ETC) This DTC is set when the powertrain control module (PCM) detects an engine idle speed that is less than the desired RPM. Possible Causes: 1) Air intake restriction 2) Exhaust restriction 3) Engine mechanical fault. 4) Damaged electronic throttle body (ETB) 5) Damaged PCM This DTC is informational only and it may be accompanied by other DTCs. Diagnose other DTCs first. If other DTCs are not present inspect the intake air system for air restrictions and damage. If no concerns are present, clear the DTC and retest. Solution: I found carbon build up in the Throttle Body at and around the butterfly inside the throttle body. Some brake wash and a rag quickly removed the carbon build up. Tested, and Idle speed was up from 500 rpm to 800 rpm. Test drove and the vehicle performed as it should. Fixed!!
