Ford Expedition Oil Light

Question: I have a 2000 Ford Expedition. The oil light comes on and the oil gauge goes to low. What could this be and what would it cost to repair? Answer : This is a common issue related to the oil pressure sending unit. You will need to have the oil pressure sending unit replaced. This is a common failure part. The entire repair should be $75.00 or less.

  1. I am having a simular problem. I have an 03 expedition 4.6l. The engine gummed up several months ago and develpoed a knocking. I had the engine flushed and chenged the oil several times and the knock went away. About two weeks ago I noticed after the vehicle warmed up at idle the oil pressure would drop out and the hi temp low oil light would come on but after getting the rpms up passed 1000 the pressure would come back up and light goes off. It is now getting worse and doing the same thing pretty much all the time. The oil level is fine the coolant is fine and there is no noise coming from the engine. Could this be the sendin unit as well?

  2. In Your case it could be either the sending unit (cheapest) or a semi-clogged oil pump pick up tube(removal of oil pan required).

I would try the sending unit first!!

  3. is there a sending unit for the light and the gauge? i was told by the auto parts place that there are 2 separate switches. it seems too coincidental that they would both go out at once. do you think it is the semi-clogged oil pump tube?

  4. The vehicle had an option. Either the dash is equipped with an oil pressure gauge (then buy the one for the gauge) or non-gauge witch if referred to as a light or idiot light. If it was clogged, the engine would be knocking....

  5. I have a 2000 expedition e/b. I have a similiar problem. My oil level indicator light will all of a sudden go to the low and then spring back up to mid-level jsut randomly. It seems as though it happens when it's cold outside(Indiana). It did it last year at this time. I just got my oil changed and it wouldn't replicate. Do you think its the sending unit or the oil pump tube? Can a mechanic tell which one it is and if not which one would you replace?

  6. I have the same problem. I have replaced the sending unit and replaced the oil pump and it is still doing it. What else can I try besides running it off a cliff.

  8. Sounds like your oil pressure sending unit is going out, have it replaced and it should fix the problem. Assuming of course the engine oil level is full.
