Sandbags for traction or no?
I have a 2003 Olds Silhouette minivan.
Currently, the traction control & ABS are inoperable more than likely
due to needing rear brake work. I don't care about the ABS, but the
traction control definitely made a difference.
I do not have the seats in the back of the van. My sister, who has
TONS of experience driving curvy backroads in the worst of Michigan
winter conditions, recommended I get sandbags and put them over the
axle & rear wheel wells to aid in traction.
I have done so - a friend loaded me up with feed bags full of wet
sand, which are laying flat across the width of the van, probably
weighing in at a total of between 175 and 200 lbs.
But my dad thinks this is either useless or counter-productive, as
this is a front-wheel drive vehicle. He wonders if this isn't even
maybe causing an ever-so-slight dip in the back that is bringing the
front tires every so slightly off the road (as if you put all the
weight at the back of a boat, causing the front to rise up out of the
water).
My tires are ok, could be better, could be worse. I am generally an
exceptionally good Michigan winter driver. But I have already ended up
in a ditch once and had to have AAA come get me out, and ended up on
the side of the road another time and had to dig out from under the
tires to get back on the road. I'm now feeling exceptionally paranoid
driving in snow, which I never did before. I have seriously never
gotten into a skid I couldn't get out of before this.
Do you think the sandbags are a bad idea?

How to find free Auto Wiring Diagrams
Searching the internet for free auto wiring diagrams you would think would be an easy task, but you have to know where to look. You can try the overly mentioned way of just typing in what you want into the Google search box or yahoo search box but most of teh results aren't exactly what you are looking for. Say you typed in ford f150 engine wiring diagrams. You can't be sure if it is the right year or the right engine by looking at the hundred results on the page. This can be confusing.
So make it easy on yourself. Just head over to http://freeautomechanic.com/wiringdiagrams.html
If you read to the bottom of the page and follow the directions you will see that you can be specific in the model and features you are looking for. Freeautomechanic.com takes the time to look up and send you the correct Auto wiring diagram you are looking for and at no cost to you. So why not give it a try?

Auto Parts Shipping Costs
As it gets closer to the holiday season it seems more difficult to keep up with every day tasks. We all know it just has to do with more action happening do to the season and this can become difficult at times without a little extra help from an outside source. Last season I found my self so overloaded that we took the time to look around for some good transportation management software to help with the load. We not only found it useful for organizational purposes but found it had the ability to cut some of our shipping costs. The software will let you compare costs between carriers quickly and easily. Besides, who doesn't want to save money anytime they can when shipping your auto parts or anything for that matter. It is great to have your parts delivered on time and at the cheapest cost possible.
This software has the ability to save you time, which is money. The software will make your record keeping and billing very easy and streamlined. This is truly a transportation management solutions gift to anyone in the office. We are now thinking about expanding our Auto parts sales now that we have more time to focus on what counts. We don't have the need for it but thought it might be worth mentioning to you that they also offer hazmat shipping for those that find themselves in need of this kind of service. And the best thing about this software is there is no long term contract, you just pay on a "per usage" basis. So why not take your auto parts business to the next level and give it a try, We enjoy having it and we think you and your customers will benefit from it just the same.
If you have used this software please take the time to comment about it below and let everyone know what you think about it. Maybe you have used a different software or have some other ideas, either way feel free to share your comments below.

cat possibly stopping up now?
lately i been trying to back out of driveway and it has been flooding a lot. timing is set and have checked spark plugs, wires and the rotercap. i done some research and found out that it could possibly be my catalytic converter. when i finally get going, for close to 2 miles it acts like its still flooding, and ill be holding my gas to the floor and still acts up. I do not smell any sulphur smell or anything. I have no check engine light on, but i think its just startng to happen. is there any other ways to test it before i get it cut off? (i been planning on cutting off and running straight pipe for my glasspack only if i have to though so itll make it louder) thanks

Oil Change
Listening to someone saying that he bought a new car and the manufacturer recommends only changing oil when the light comes on in the dash. Is that the same light that lets one know when the oil level is low? Actually when that idiot light comes on you have 10 seconds to pull over and shut the motor off before it blows...

A/C Blows Hot, What could be the problem?
Any automotive air conditioning system employs four basic parts-a mechanical compressor, driven by the vehicle's engine; an expansion valve, which is a restriction the compressor pumps against; and two heat exchangers, the evaporator and the condenser. In addition, there is the refrigerant that flows through this system. If the system is low on the refrigerant ( R134a for automotive use) than the system will blow hot air. In most cases the vehicles system can be recharged. Check for leaks before recharging.

Find Out All That You Should Understand Regarding Static Frequency Converters
In the world of advancement nowadays, there are many tools that the electrical or electronics engineer can use to have his desired output. It’s because there have been a great deal of progression in the field of technology that just about anything is achievable these days. Probably the most important components that the electrical engineer has up his sleeve is referred to as the static frequency converter that is simply the heart and soul of any modern-day machinery. Static frequency converters were first called upon when engineers had to run machines on differing alternative current frequencies.
Because the main supply in almost any country is set to a standard frequency, the only option that the engineers were to formulate a solution where the frequency of the electricity was literally converted inside of the device. For this specific purpose, the static frequency converter was devised. However the design of this converter was never destined to be an easy one, as the basic problem the engineers faced while discovering the static frequency converters, is the fact that they had to make certain that the voltage of the current kept the same, and concurrently the consistency can be tweaked with.
Apart from the obvious of setting it in equipments which require unique frequencies to work on, there are additional important effective applications of this static frequency converter. For example, the tool can be used as a regulator and controller of torque and speed of various modern Alternative Current machines.
A far more glamorous use of the static frequency converters is basically the performance of these within the aerospace and also commercial airline sectors. The reason being there’s a distinction between the energy required for the airplane in the air and the power frequency needed on the ground – to compensate for this variance, the static frequency converter is put into use. If you’d like one of these brilliant devices, you can look for Static frequency converter on the internet.
There is an additional use of the static frequency converter in planes, that’s where the aircraft requires that the people are made to be given some electrical power into their wall sockets for laptops and many others. however the laptop computers won’t run at the frequency which the aircraft generators are churning out, as a result, the static frequency converters are used to principally create the wall sockets functional for the passengers.
Even so the most critical utilisation of the static frequency converters in houses is when you may want to manage the speed of numerous Electricity motors in your own home. For the layman that may not make very much sense, but consider the way you manage the rate of say your fan or any other motor equipment in your own home. That is actually possible as the static frequency converter is there to help you toggle between the various frequencies at which you need your appliance to operate on. Thus the innovative invention of the static frequency converters have really assisted the engineers design better contemporary equipment which basically shows that we can reside in much more comfort than we had ever imagined possible.
Find out more details on Frequency Converters and ways in which they’ve changed the way you live as well as control power.

2003 Chevy Trailblazer Battery Light on
I have a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer and the battery light came on. It lights up on the dash and will stay on untill i take it off idle. I just had my alternator replaced 2 months ago with one from Napa Auto Parts. I took it to a local auto parts store and they tested the alternator and said it was good. They also tested the battery under load and said it was only at 75% and I should replace it. Since the battery was 6 years old, I decided I would replace the battery. After all that, nothing has changed. What could be the problem?

s10 idle problem
i have 88 s10. it has trouble running when i get it started. it will just die on me when i touch brake to put into gear it dies. when i can get going finally, i can let it idle then it runs rough then dies on me. i have to lightly hold down gas and put it in park or neutral at red light or stop sign. so far i have set the timing and that has not helped. i have looked in my haynes manual at the choke and turns out my 4.3 has throttle body. i have cleaned the throttle body with carb cleaner and it didn't help either.
i was told that i have an electronic vacuum regulator valve or map sensor that could be going bad possibly. what are the symptoms of one of them going bad? how can i see if maybe i have a vacuum leak somewhere? thanks

1995 Neon problems (still)
This has gone on so much that I am at wits end. All sensors, ignition coil, fuel pump, fuel filter, and relays have been changed out. I was told to check for the hall effect but that is something that concerns a carborated engine and this one is fuel injected. Fuel pump relay is working as well. What would make the fuel pump shut down? If it stalls you can listen for the pump to kick in and after the 2nd time the car will start. I called a dealer but they want $166 just to look at it. IS there anyone who could and will help me as this is my only car? Thank you to all.

1) Get your ECM Checked.

Need Help with Break Lights
I have a 95 Chevy G-20 series conversion van, I have running lights, blinkers, but no break lights, when the lights are on I have running lights, without lights on, I have nothing but blinkers. I checked and changed the bulbs, still notta, I had the shop check all the fuses under the dash, I also was told it was probably the break light switch, so I just changed it and still notta clue, does anyone have any Ideas of what it could be?
Response:
1) You may have just blew the fuse, check that & check that the turn sig switch is plugged in tight, it will be under the dash on the column, a flat plug with aroun 12-15 wires, and it may be attacheched to a bracket on the column
2) Could be as simple as the brake light switch mounted on the pedal, quite common on older vehicles.

When should I replace my belt?
You should replace your serpentine belt as often as it is needed. Recommended Manufacturer intervals ar every 15,000 miles for inspection and Every 45,000 for replacement. This is usually a fairly simple process as can be seen in the video to your right. Just make sure you study the position or draw a picture to help you remember how to put the new one back on. Release pressure from the belt tensioner and swap out the belt. Some variations may apply but it is basically the same process.

Toyota recall over steering pump defects
Toyota Motor
Corp. is recalling 2.77 million vehicles around the world for a water pump problem and a
steering shaft defect that may result in faulty steering — the latest in a spate
of quality woes for Japan's top automaker.
No accidents have been reported related to
these two problems announced Wednesday, according to Toyota.
Some 1.51 million vehicles are being
recalled for the steering defect in Japan and 1.25 million vehicles abroad —
including 670,000 in the U.S. Affected models include the Prius hybrid, Corolla,
Wish and other models produced from 2000 to 2011 in Japan, and from 2000 to 2009
overseas.
Of those vehicles, some 620,000 spanning
five hybrid models,
including the Prius, have a defective water pump in addition to the steering
shaft defect. Those vehicles were produced from 2001 to 2010 in Japan, and from
2003 to 2011 overseas. Another 10,000 vehicles with only a pump problem are also
being recalled.
The latest recalls — affecting Toyota's
prized Prius hybrid, a symbol of its technological prowess — come on top of a
recall last month for 7.43 million vehicles for a faulty power-window switch
that could cause fires.
Toyota has been trying to fix its
reputation after a series of massive recalls of 14 million vehicles over the
last several years, mostly in the U.S., affecting faulty floor mats, braking and
gas pedals.
Before that, Toyota had boasted a
reputation for pristine quality, centered around its super-lean production
methods that empowered workers to hone in on quality control. Toyota executives have
acknowledged the escalating recalls were partly caused by the company's overly
ambitious growth goals.
Executives had shrugged off last month's
recalls as coming from products made before stricter quality controls kicked in
following the soul-searching that came after the recall scandal in the U.S.
But the latest recall underlines how
quality problems continue to dog Toyota, especially as it has gone back to
pursuing aggressive growth.
Toyota is now headed to record vehicle
sales around the world, offsetting a sales plunge in China with booming demand
in emerging markets such as Indonesia, India and Thailand.

Problem with my car air conditioner
I
have a problem with my Honda CIVIC air conditioner. The air conditioner stops working after about half hour of
running. It starts to work if the engine is switched off for about 15 minutes. I
am quite hesitant to take it to a dealer as they tend to make it a bigger
problem than it actually is.
Could
any of you throw some light on what the problem is and if I could fix it on my
own. A friend of mine suggested it could be due to the condensation water
getting frozen, but he is not able to explain it.
I
am not an expert with machines though but I can manage to do some repairs
through simple instructions
Could
somebody help

Chevy S-10 driver's side door lock needs fixed
A few days ago someone decided to push the driver's side door lock into the door
where it can't be accessed with the key.
What will I need to do (besides removing the interior trim) to fix this? I don't have the official shop manual that shows a breakdown of all parts and assemblies on the truck.
I'm assuming that the tumbler is inside the door. If it is, can I swap out the junkyard replacement with the tumbler set from my truck?
After finding out what's involved, I can then go ahead and look for a replacement or assembly and proceed from there. I don't want to take it apart and leave it apart if I can do it all in one operation, but if I need to open it up to see what's in there, I will.
I've never done a lock swap before, so this is new territory to me.

Window Motor Regulator Assembly Repair
Nine out of ten times when your window won't go up or down it is caused by a window motor or the window motor regulator assembly. In most cases the two are replaced as a complete unit. Generally it is harder to get the door panel off then it is to swap out the window motor and regulator. The above diagram shows the typical design of most vehicles and how easy it is to swap out. Of course some cars are easier when they have bolts instead of rivets. For those cars that have rivets, the replacement parts will come with nuts and bolts to use in place of the rivets. Easy enough to drill out rivets and put bolts back in if you don't have a supply of rivets and a rivet gun lying around. In my shop we generally charge around $276.00 parts nad labor for this repair.

My Brake Light came on while driving
The Brake light illuminates and the first thing that comes to mind is "PANIC", I might not be able to stop! Your first instinct is to immediately press the brake pedal to see if it will stop the car. It would be in your best interest to wait a moment, look in the rear view mirror to make sure no one is right an your ass. If you need to, let off the gas pedal and allow the car to slow on its own for a bit. While the car is slowing, go ahead and turn on your emergency flashers... Yes this is a good time to use them. This will give the car behind you the ability to pull around you if need be and let the other drivers around you know something is up with your car. Now, go ahead and try to slow the car to a stop by pressing the brake pedal slowly. If you find it stops normal, go ahead and get the car pulled in to a safe parking spot. Pop the hood and check the brake fluid level . If there is some brake fluid in the resivoir but slightly low, then you probably are fine to continue to drive the car until you get a chance to get it into the shop to have your brake pad linnings inspected. If the brake fluid level is completely empty, do not try to drive it any further. Have the car towed to the shop for repairs.

No Problems encountered over the winter time and then today first hot day in michigan same problem….any ideas? No codes could be found when taken to shops.   someone said faulty fuel pump wiring harness overheating?   But why would it restart? Or something to do with overdive on the transmission as it stalls or cuts of and wont retart until it cools off????   Thanks in advance again this only happens when the outside temp is 75 or above out I guess…. No service engine lights illuminate or any diagnosis codes are stored

Gm Electric Power Steering system delivers steering assist
On a GM electric power steering system, if the steering wheel is turned to its maximum rotation(against the steering stop) and held there, the power steering control module (PSCM) will respond by commanding the maximum amount of currnet to the EPS motor. Jus tlike the old hydraulic systems, the electric system tries to provide assist to overcome the resistance of the steering stop. But if the steering wheel is held in this position for an extended period of time, the PSCM will go into overload protection mode to avoid system thermal damage. In this mode, the PSCM will limit the amount of current commanded to the EPS motor, which has the effect of reducing the power steering assist level.

1963 Chevy Corvette
Not to often do you come across one of these classic muscle cars. But when you do, It is worth the time to stop and appreciate a natural beauty. Its is even nicer to see that it isn't locked away in a garage somewhere that no one can see. Sure, this split window corvette might not be all original but who could last almost 50 years without needing a new pair of shoes? I can't say i blame the owner for parking in the last parking spot in the lot of the local SteakHouse as he wouldn't be able to enjoy his meal otherwise. I'll leave you with a saying I heard from my father as I was growing up.
Years ago Cars were cars, men were men and women were glad they were!

chevy 2500hd diesel wont start. I have replaced the fuel pump
My chevy 2500hd diesel wont start. I have replaced the fuel pump,
fuel line with a ridged one and the fuel tank sensor. The dealer ship
just replaces the fuel filter and everything is fine for two or three
weeks and then i have to get towed in. Then they replace the fuel filter
and we do it again.
Response:
Is the filter or the sensor under the filter coming loose? If not then it could an issue with the filter housing. These have had issue.

1965 Pontiac GTO
Came upon this classic muscle car in the parking lot of the local Steak house. This 1965 Pontiac GTO is a classic for sure. With its 389 tri-power engine and factory posi rear end this muscle car was a serious contender in its day. And I would dare say that even today would be hard to beat at the drag strip against other stock rockers.

Toyota to recall 7.4 million vehicles over power window glitch
Toyota Motor Corpsaid it would recall more than 7.4 million vehicles worldwide as a faulty power window switch was a potential fire hazard, the latest in a series of setbacks that have dented the reputation of Japan's biggest automaker.
The voluntary move is the biggest single recall since Ford pulled 8 million vehicles off the road in 1996 to replace defective ignition switches that could have caused engine fires.
Toyota has battled its way back from multiple difficulties since 2008, including a series of recalls involving more than 10 million of its vehicles in 2009-11, and crippled supply chains from last year's earthquake and tsunami in Japan and floods in Thailand. It posted its biggest quarterly operating profit in four years in April-June.
The firm regained its crown as the world's best-selling automaker in the first half year and expects to sell 9.76 million cars and light trucks globally this year, including the Daihatsu and Hino brands.
More recently, though, Toyota - and other Japanese brands - have seen sales plummet in China, the world's biggest autos market, as a result of protests in a simmering Sino-Japanese territorial dispute.Toyota said on Tuesday that its China sales fell 48.9 percent year-on-year in September. Sales in China account for about 12 percent of its total.
QUICK FIX
The recall, intended to fix a malfunctioning power window switch on the driver's side, primarily affects cars in the United States, China and Europe.
Toyota's main rivals in the U.S. include Ford and General Motors Co , while in China they include Volkswagen AG , Hyundai Motor Co <005380 .ks=".ks"> and Nissan Motor Co Ltd <7201 .t=".t">, and in Europe, Hyundai and Nissan.7201>005380>
The recall will include some Yaris and Corolla models, with repairs taking about 40 minutes, the company said.
"The process to repair (the power window switch) is not an extensive one," spokeswoman Monika Saito said, adding that it would involve putting heat-resistant grease on the switches, or exchanging them.
Toyota declined to say how much the recall would cost, or what impact it may have on future earnings.
Koichi Sugimoto, senior analyst at BNP Paribas Securities in Tokyo, estimated the recall could cost at least 10 billion yen ($128 million).
"Of course, 7 million vehicles is a huge number, but it's probably not going to be like last time when customers in the United States avoided buying Toyota cars. This sounds like a completely different scale from then," he said.
GLOBAL SCALE
The recall will include 2.47 million vehicles in the United States, 1.4 million in China and 1.39 million in Europe, the company said.
No accidents, injuries or deaths have been reported as a result of the problem, though there is a possibility the malfunctioning switches could emit smoke, Saito said. Toyota's U.S. news release said the problem could lead to fire if commercially available lubricants were used on the switch.
Toyota will take in for repair about 459,300 vehicles in Japan, including the Vitz model, produced between 2006 and 2008.
The firm is also recalling 650,000 vehicles in Australia and Asia, 490,000 in the Near and Middle East, 240,000 in Canada and 330,000 elsewhere, said Shino Yamada, another spokeswoman forToyota.
The vehicles recalled outside Japan include some models of the Yaris, Vios, Corolla, Matrix, Auris, Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Tundra, Sequoia, xB and xD produced between 2005 and 2010.
The first time the problem was reported was in September 2008 in the United States, Saito said.

5 ways to spend less on car insurance
Generally most consumers understand that paying less for the same coverage is purely common sense. However, there are some steps that can be taken that can insure that you pay less.
1)Compare Pricing You can use the tool provided to compare rates from different insurance companies without any fees what so ever. Take advantage of the new computer age and save on hold time if trying to get rates over the phone.
2)Consider your Deductable You have the option of raising your deductable and at the same time lowering your rates. The risk of a claim is much lower for the insurance company so they reward you with a much lower rate.
3)Safety Features Most Insurance companies adjust there quotes according to some of the safety features. If your car is equipped with a car alarm, air bags or ABS, make sure you let them know so they can pass even more savings your way.
4)Driving Record Keep your driving record clean. Most insurance companies go back 3 yrs when checking.
