Which Car would you advise getting?

If you want to avoid a situation where a broken timing belt causes serious engine damage, make sure you buy a car with a non-interference engine. There are many still made. Every vehicle I own has a non-interference engine. http://www.freeautomechanic.com/TimingBelts.pdf http://yourcarangel.com/2014/07/interference-engines-complete-list/ http://www.agcoauto.com/content/List_Of_Interference_Engines With an interference engine, there would be valves crashing into pistons if the timing belt breaks. With a non-interference engine, there is no position of the crankshaft and camshaft that allows that to happen. I don't suggest that you ignore replacement of the timing belt at the recommended intervals, but if you do find yourself with a broken timing belt on a non-interference engine, you'll only be out a towing charge and the shop charge for replacing the belt. If you change your own, you would only be out a towing charge to where you do your car repair work at. I wish all vehicles had non-interference engines, but it isn't likely to ever happen. And that doesn't mean an interference type engine a poor design; it merely means that it wasn't a design goal when the engine was designed. There are some Lexus engines, by the way, that are of the non-interference type, and some of the engines used in the Escapes are also that type.

  3. I already had this happen to me! My timing belt broke on my 1998 Isuzu Amigo and ruined the engine within seconds! I checked the maintenance schedule and it said to replace it every 75000 miles. I was at 124000 when it broke. This was a very expensive repair so definitely check your owners manual about this. Now I use a great software product Automotive Wolf Vehicle Maintenance Schedule Software that reminds me when any car maintenance is needed on any of my vehicles. Really useful software that will save you money on repairs.
