Need Help with a Rewire?
I bought myself a 96 ford ranger xlt. At some point in its history it
was broken into and stolen via a hot wire. Needles to say considering
the steering column is $170 it was never fixed and I bought it without
an ignition. To start it I have to use a screwdriver to push the slide
forward and then cross the solenoid under the hood. This wasn't so bad
considering I bought it for $500 and it ran when I bought it. It still
runs but when I occasionally stall it(yup it's a stick) it's a real
bugger to restart quickly. I am more than happy to have a hot wire
switch from the solenoid to a switch on my dash put in BUT mildly
frightened to do it myself without some instructions. Can anyone help?

Just run 2 heavy wires through the firewall and buy yourself this

Is there any wrong way of running those wires? I've wired light switches and plugs but I know that doesn't make me an electrician, only means the house didn't burn down and 110v won't electrocute you.
ReplyDelete110v can kill you if grounded properly. Folks have been killed by 48 volts. You can wire these any way you want. I'm lazy, so I always pick the easiest way. Just get them from the solenoid, thru the firewall, to the dash, and mount a switch.
ReplyDeleteDon't assume (ass/u/me) that 110v will not kill you. A hundred years ago my neighbor had an electric fence around his corral to keep the horses from rubbing the fence. It was six (6) volts and when the ground was wet, it would knock a horse down.
ReplyDeletealways respect electricity, and fire. and always take precautions when dealing with either.
