the back axle seems very noisy. It doesn’t clonk but it’s loud.

I have a 1999 BMW Z3 with the basic engine. I like the vehicle a lot, but the back axle seems very noisy. It doesn’t clonk but it’s loud. Is this normal? I realise that it’s very close to the driver.

  1. You are right you can usually hear some noise from the rear axle area because you are so close to the rear axle,Having said that the noise may be due to various factors.

Firstly i would check the tires if good quality tires are not used these can create harsh road noise. Also i would recommend getting the vehicle on and ramp and running vehicle up to 30 mph (turn of traction control if fitted) and listen to the rear axle to see if this produces any grinding type noise.if you also have access to a stethoscope this can be placed on each rear stub axle next to the dampers to check if the rear wheel bearing are noisy if the these are ok and no excessive noise can be found from the rear axle i would check the rear axle oil.
